Four 6's

Four 6's

Looking for a unique place to hang your hat in Fredericksburg over the weekend? Look no further – stay in our rustic yet plush railroad car – just like Teddy Rooselvelt did in April of 1905 when he was the personal guest of the original owner of this business car.

This car was once the pride of Samuel Burke Burnett, a famous Texas cattleman and owner of the Quanah, Acme & Pacific Railway. The car was named for Burnett's famous Four Sixes Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in Texas sweeping everything west of Fort Worth to Lubbock and into southern Oklahoma, which was then still just a Territory. It was built by Pullman in 1894 and bought soon after by Burnett, who branded it the "6666". Rumor had it that Burnett won a big poker pot with a hand of four sixes, and that he adopted that brand to celebrate the win. The truth is that Burnett bought a herd of some 100 cattle from a Frank Crowley in 1871 and kept the "6666" brand which was already on the stock.

In April 1904 President Theodore Roosevelt came to Texas to meet Burnett and together they traveled by train from Fort Worth to Frederick, Oklahoma for a hunt. In 1917, Burnett leased the Four Sixes to the railroad. Soon thereafter Burnett died and the car was leased from the service of the QA&P by the Frisco Line. Sometime after the 1960's the Frisco returned the "6666" to the QA&P and they sold it to a private party in Tennessee. It is now owned by Fischer & Wieser Specialty Foods, Inc. and serves as a unique bed and breakfast.
